Football focus for sporty students
The working partnership between Swansea College and Swansea City Football Club continues to go from strength to strength.
Five ex-students - Jon Beale, Andrew Stokes, Nicky Lloyd, Garry Taylor and James Goshawk - are now employed at the club at coaches.
Meanwhile, current National Award student Jamie Beale is also getting in on the act, as a part time volunteer.
“We are really proud of our links with Swansea City and our students have been given some amazing opportunities within the club,” says college football coach Ashleigh Hopkins, who also doubles at SCFC Under 15’s Manager. “The skills and abilities they develop as part of their sports courses set them in really good stead for a career in the industry. I also think it’s important for them to progress onto a local club, where they can inspire the football stars of tomorrow.”
Ashleigh is not the only member of Swansea College staff to work with the Swans. His colleague Richard South also coaches the Under 14’s squad.
"Swansea College is a fantastic establishment where students can pursue their education and develop themselves within the football environment, both as players and as coaches,” says SCFC Coach Jonathan Beale. “I really enjoyed my years at Swansea College and it has been a great a stepping stone for my coaching. Being able to work with experienced coaches like Ashleigh and Richard helped me further develop my skills as a coach. I would recommend Swansea College to any young sports person as it will give them the best opportunity to further develop their sporting credentials."
