Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the colleges merging?

We believe that bringing together two successful organisations like Swansea College and Gorseinon College will create an institution that provides outstanding learning opportunities and experiences for students.

Will the merger affect the course I have enrolled on/am about to enrol on?

Every student who enrols on a full time course in 2009 should be able to finish that course at the campus where he/she started it, providing there are sufficient numbers on the course to make it viable [a condition we have every year and which applies to all courses at all levels.]

What about my course timetable?

The merger should not affect the course timetables in the foreseeable future. However, course timetabling is always subject to a number of factors and, as usual, we cannot guarantee that a course will definitely run in the same time slot year after year.

Will there be any changes to course fees?

Course fees are reviewed every year. As we would be one institution after the merger we would be looking to align our fees.

Will class sizes be affected?

Class sizes are always dependent on the number of students who have enrolled for a particular course.

Will I still be able to access college facilities such as the library?

Yes. All students will be able to access college facilities, such as the libraries, common rooms and canteens, in exactly the same way as before. In fact, students will be able to access more resources as both colleges will be open to all students.

Will courses move to another campus in the future?

At this stage no decisions on curriculum locations for the future have been made.

Will support mechanisms, such as progress and attendance monitoring, still be the same?

Both colleges provide effective support mechanisms and will at least maintain existing levels of support in the new college.

Will the name of my college change?

Yes. A new name will be chosen that reflects the combined new college. However, it is planned that both Swansea and Gorseinon will retain their college campus names and unique brand and identities.

Will any of the existing college campuses close?

The vision for the merged college is to ultimately have two campuses - the current Belgrave Road site at Gorseinon [with some improvements] and a new Swansea city centre campus, where students will be able to experience the most up-to-date accommodation and resources in an iconic new building.

If these plans go ahead, the Tycoch and other Swansea College campuses would eventually close. However, this would be some time in the future.
