Samuel is Swansea Learner of the Year

Swansea College Access to Law student Samuel Martin recently scooped the 2010 Swansea County Learner of the Year Award.

Samuel attended the special awards ceremony at the Coal Exchange, Cardiff, with his lecturer Mandy Wyn Davies, who originally nominated him.

"Samuel is an inspiration, a student with a wonderful attitude towards his work and his fellow students," says Mandy. "His outlook on life – even when faced with problems – is totally positive. In addition, he is always 100% focused on his studies and has achieved Distinction grades across the board.”

Samuel is now heading to Swansea University to study Law.

“It was a great pleasure to be nominated and I’m dedicating my award to Mandy, because she made everything possible,” says Samuel.

Swansea College student wins British Colleges Surfing Championships

A group of Swansea College students recently travelled to Cornwall to compete in the second BCS Water Sports Championships.

The students competed in both the surfing and body boarding competitions at Gwithian Bay near St Ives.

Tom Perkins, a second year Engineering student, won a close final to take the BCS surfing title. He beat 15 other surfers in the competition, including a number of surfers from Cornwall College and Truro College who were competing on their local beach.

Special mention should also go to Lewis Tucker [Engineering] and Jack Banks [Sport] who made the effort to travel and compete in the body boarding event.

Principal congratulates fundraisers

Staff and students from Swansea College recently raised £1000 by undertaking a 40-mile sponsored walk at Cannock Chase. The money will go to various good causes including the college-run Kenya Project initiative.

In addition, student Josh Davies raised £265 for Sport Relief.

Everyone who took part in this event was recently congratulated by Principal Jeff Gunningham at the Tycoch campus.

"The walk, which must be completed in 19 hours, was a real test of endurance and we are really proud of the money we raised,” says lecturer Ian Peabody.

Roll out the red carpet...

Forget Cannes! Media students from Swansea College are holding their very own film festival on the evening of 27th May.

For the second year National Diploma students at Llwyn y Bryn, this will be an opportunity to showcase their final major productions.

First year students are also involved as they have been given the responsibility of planning and managing the event.

“We’re really excited about the film festival,” says Curriculum Team Leader Nichola Watkins. “For our second year students in particular it will be a momentous occasion as it’s the grand finale after two years of hard work and commitment.”

Supported Studies, Welsh Schools Runners Up

The Supported Studies football team participated in the Welsh Schools Football finals day in Newtown on Wednesday 19th May, after winning both the local and regional tournaments.

In a really strong competition it came down to the final game, against St Christophers (Wrexham) where a victory would have seen the team return victorious. The students put in an excellent fighting performance and were unlucky to lose 3-1, against a very strong team who play in the English Premier League, with some players in the Everton Academy.

If Nathan Redgrave's shot had gone in instead of hitting the post with the scores 1-1 the outcome could have been totally different.

The students must take great credit as they were a credit to both themselves and the College, showing both excellent behaviour and great sportsmanship.

Students who played:

  • Nathan Redgrave
  • Michael Roberts
  • Michael Whiteman
  • Andrew Morris
  • Martin O ‘Reily
  • Ritchie Chippendale
  • Nathan Whitbread
  • Daniel Madden
