Evening enrolment sessions at Tycoch

Gower College Swansea is holding a series of evening enrolment sessions at Tycoch next week.

These sessions are for people interested in starting a part time course.

From Monday 13th September to Wednesday 15th September, enrolments will be taking place from 5pm to 7.30pm in the main hall at Tycoch.

Staff from Student Services will be on hand to provide advice and guidance on available courses and funding.

Anyone wishing to enrol should bring along proof of identity such as a passport, National Insurance card or driving licence.

Students access success

Access students from Gower College Swansea will be recognised at a special awards ceremony at Llwyn y Bryn this week.

“Many of our students are mature learners who have returned to education after several years of working and/or looking after their families,” says Access coordinator Suzanne Arnold. “We feel it’s really important to hold an event that highlights their amazing achievements.”

This year, almost 400 students have enrolled on the college’s various Access programmes. These courses are ideal for students who wish to supplement existing qualifications in order to progress to higher education.

“Most of our graduating students of 2010 are now on their way to university to study subjects as varied as midwifery, nursing, criminology and youth justice, social work, Egyptology, English, business and law degrees,” adds Suzanne. “We wish them all the best!”

Exciting start to the college year

Up to 1000 first year students are expected to attend the Tycoch Freshers’ Fayre on 8th September.

With a climbing wall and car crash demo not to mention street dance, freestyle football and freestyle BMX on offer, there will be plenty of energetic activities for students to enjoy.

“The Freshers’ Fayre is a fantastic event that welcomes students to the college,” says Enrichment Manager Rob Baynham. “New students can to get to know each other, pick up useful information and have a go at the many activities on offer. I’m delighted that so many local organisations have again supported us by attending this year’s event.”

Other highlights on the day include non-contact boxing and a DJ set. Among the many contributors are the Welsh Blood Service, South Wales Police and the LC.

Exam success for Welsh students

Gower College Swansea’s Welsh for Adults students [Tycoch] are celebrating another fantastic set of exam results.

Both the Entry and Foundation level courses achieved an impressive 100% pass rate this year.

“The exams consist of speaking, writing, listening and reading tests,” says WfA Coordinator Llinos Davies. “We are all very pleased with these results, which are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students.”

Singled out for special praise are Christina King and Susan Mortimer, who both got a Distinction in their Foundation level exams.

College supports the next generation of rugby stars

From September, talented sports students at Swansea’s newest college – Gower College Swansea - will be able to sign up for a brand new Rugby Academy.

Endorsed by the Ospreys, the Rugby Academy will feature players from Tycoch and Gorseinon.

“The Academy coincides with the launch of a new course – the BTEC Level 3 Performance and Excellence in Rugby – which includes six hours of dedicated rugby training a week,” says curriculum team leader Marc O’Kelly. “We want to continue to nurture and support the next generation of rugby stars so there is a real focus on this area for the upcoming academic year.”

Players from Gower College Swansea will also be put through their paces when the Welsh Rugby Union launches its Elite Colleges League next season.

The Rugby Academy was officially launched on 31st August at Dunvant Rugby Club.
