Students prepare show with festive flavour

Performing Arts students at Swansea College are getting ready to entertain over 2000 local school pupils when they put on their annual festive show at Llwyn y Bryn.

‘The Runaway Christmas Present’ was devised and written by the National Diploma students and will run for a week in December, with most of the school matinees already sold out.

“Creating a festive show for children with a musical theatre or pantomime flavour is an important part of the students’ coursework,” says curriculum team leader Martin Johnson. “At Swansea College, student creativity in terms of writing, choreography, improvisation and direction are as much a part of the course as performing.”

There is one public performance on 11th December for family and friends. For ticket information please contact Llwyn y Bryn on 01792 284021.

Entrepreneurial extravaganza at college

Students enjoy Enterprise Week
Students from Swansea College enjoyed a five-day entrepreneurial extravaganza when they celebrated Enterprise Week recently.

Every day during the week, there were different challenges and activities taking place designed to stimulate students’ imagination and boost their business acumen.

On Monday, the week kicked off with ‘Make Your Mark,’ a national competition for schools and colleges which asked students to invent a cool new product or business linked to their locality. It was thinking caps on for the six groups involved with three teams being shortlisted to go forward to the next round.

“We specifically wanted a different angle on each day,” explains Swansea College Enterprise Education Manager Sue Poole. “On Tuesday we worked with our students who undertook a task called the ‘Cereal Box Challenge’ where they have to invent a new breakfast brand for children. Careers Wales then completed the day with a challenge for students to work in teams and compete against each other in a travel challenge. Then on Wednesday we held a special ‘Women in Enterprise’ event where we invited four local businesswomen to meet with female students to share their experiences over coffee and cakes in a one-to-one networking session to motivate and inspire the female entrepreneurs of the future.”

Swansea College also participated in the Young Chamber of Commerce launch event at the Ethos building, alongside Swansea Metropolitan University, Swansea University, Gorseinon College and Neath Port Talbot College, which saw student interns presenting their vision of the Young Chamber to local members of the Chamber of Commerce and invited guests.

The week ended on a fun note with a fund-raising bonanza for Children in Need.

Moustaches = money

Movember
A group of Swansea College lecturers are growing their facial hair to raise money for ‘Movember,’ an annual celebration of the moustache that also highlights men’s health issues.

“We wanted to do something to raise money and awareness,” says lecturer Julian Fuge. “We started growing our moustaches at the beginning of the month and hope to have a pretty impressive look by the end. We might even start dyeing them different colours as the month progresses. It’s giving the students a good laugh anyway and the more money we can raise the better.”

To date, Movember has raised over £30 million globally for the fight against prostate cancer and depression in men.

‘Question Time’ for AM

IT Welsh Baccalaureate students from Swansea College organised a special ‘Question Time’ session with local Assembly Member Andrew Davies last week.

Around 60 students from the BTEC National Diploma ICT course and A Levels welcomed the AM to the Tycoch campus. They had prepared a list of questions on the issues that matter most to them, from funding for education to housing and the environment.

Andrew Davies is the Welsh Assembly Member for the Swansea West constituency and Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery in the Welsh Assembly Government.

“Planning and organising an event like that was a fantastic experience for the Welsh Bac students and they worked very hard to pull together relevant questions to put to Mr Davies,” says ICT lecturer Clive Prosser. “The students were genuinely enthused about being given the opportunity to raise questions in this type of environment.”
