Students switch places for day

Swansea College students are switching places to mark International Women’s Day 2010.
All this week, students will be able to step into each other’s shoes and try their hand at subjects they have never encountered before. Included in this year’s session swaps are groups from Beauty, Engineering Technology, Plumbing, Hairdressing and Digital Technology.
“These swaps are always great fun for the students but, at the same time, it makes them think about generally accepted gender stereotypes,” says Jane John, the College’s Equality and Diversity Leader. “Afterwards the students have a much better understanding about their different - and similar - skills and abilities.”
In addition to the swaps, female students have been asked to complete the caption, ‘the best thing about being a woman is...’
Over 300 students have taken part so far, with responses ranging from the joys of motherhood to our talents for multi-tasking and the lure of a pair of killer heels. These responses are now on display in Tycoch, Llwyn y Bryn, the Broadway Centre and the Kingsway Centre and there will be prizes up for grabs for the most popular quotes.
Extra arts courses on offer
Due to popular demand, Swansea College is running two extra courses from March.
The Level 1 courses, both at the Llwyn y Bryn arts campus on Walter Road, are Home Textiles/Soft Furnishings/Dressmaking [Thursdays 2.30pm to 4.30pm] and Silversmithing/Jewellery Making [Thursday 1.30pm – 3.30pm and Friday 11am - 1pm.]
Although there are waiting lists for each course, there are some places still up for grabs.
“It’s unusual to have a March intake but demand for these courses has been so high that we decided to go ahead,” says Assistant Faculty Director Diane Williams.

Students set to gather for annual conference

Swansea College students are getting ready to hold their second annual conference later this week.
The event, held at Sketty Hall, will allow students to give their feedback on all aspects of college life from maintaining a healthy lifestyle on campus to designing a new college. For the latter discussion, Sara Gardner from architects BDP will join the groups to talk about the much-anticipated new city centre site.
There will be cash up for grabs too, with opportunities to bid for up to £1500 from the Student Curriculum Fund. This money has been set aside to pay for innovative projects that will improve the college experience.
“Student feedback drives everything we do throughout the year but it’s always good to get everyone together for a ‘day out’ where we can discuss the progress already made and what’s still left to achieve,” says Director of Learner Services Julie Mason. “The Curriculum Fund has been set up specifically to help students put their great ideas into practice.”
