Reaching Wider

Reaching Wider is a project aimed at widening access to Higher Education across the whole student age range.

Funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales Reaching Wider Initiative, the partnership includes Swansea University, Swansea Metropolitan University, Trinity College Carmarthen, Gorseinon College, Neath Port Talbot College, Swansea College, Careers Wales West and schools. Led by Swansea University, the project aims to extend educational participation to previously excluded and under-represented groups of people in the City and County of Swansea, the County Borough of Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire.

Focusing on disability, ethnic minority communities, Welsh medium learners and people living in Communities First areas, a range of events - from short workshops to a four week long residential Summer University - is arranged.

How does it work?
Each further education college runs individual programmes under the Reaching Wider umbrella. The aims of these programmes are threefold – to aid transition from secondary school to FE, to encourage progression from FE to HE and to help the retention of students at college.
